Winter storms hit U.S.

The strongest Northwest storm of the season blew in early Dec. 17 on winds that gusted to more than 80 mph on the coast, knocking out power in places and creating blizzard-like conditions in the mountains. Another Midwest storm has dumped more than a foot of snow in the Rocky Mountains, causing problems for travelers as it spread across the Plains.
